We youth should take a lead of setting the Global Agenda and this includes greener earth Agenda.
We all realize that over the past years, the world has woken up to the threat of climate change and the need to reduce carbon emissions in our atmosphere.

According to World Health organization, over the last 50 years, human activities particularly the burning of fossil fuels have released sufficient quantities of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases to trap additional heat in the lower atmosphere and affects the global climate.

In the last 130 years, the world has warmed by approximately 0.85oC. Each of the last 3 decades has been successively warmer than any preceding decade since 1850 and 2015 has been successively warmer compared to previous years.

Climate change will cause approximately 250,000 death of people between 2030 and 2050 in addition to the current death figures of 400,000. By 2030 the pessimistic projection of deaths is to increase to over 600,000 per year far higher than the death caused by terrorism as per Global Terrorism index.

The overwhelming number of people who have died as a result of climate change can be ameliorated if we decide to act in a collective per suit.

I know many may say I am being naively optimistic contrarily to the current realities however those who argue that pursuit of climate change action in international relations should take a back seat to the self-interested pursuits of the affected states are perhaps thinking in a 19th century perspective.

The UN through its structures should establish mechanisms of analyzing and tracing the successes and failures of international action towards mitigation and adaptation of climate change with in all countries as a fellow up to the Paris agreement of 2015.

An annual climate change and carbon reduction reports should be submitted by every country to the UN special committee indicating the measures and progress being taken in addressing carbon emission and climate change action.

As Youth we should pressurize our government as a social responsibility combined with economic responsibility to increase on the Green jobs as a mechanism of solving rising rates of youth Unemployment as well as a ,mechanism of climate change mitigation.

Legal frame work is crucial in taking solid steps towards environmental protection along with carbon emission reduction. Where as many countries have signed to the Paris agreement affirming their commitment towards climate change action but still a lot remains to be seen since many of those counties lack basic laws domesticating international laws into their municipal laws.

The longer we take to act the harder it becomes to adopt to the climate change impacts

Youth innovation and creativity is ideal in the efforts to achieve sustainable development goals thus countries should put all measures and resources needed to support youth with innovative and creativity skills which may include establishing incubation centers aimed at equipping youth with hands on skills.

As a human rights activist. Uganda youth society for human rights enjoins the rest of Non-governmental Organizations working to protect youth rights in a bid to promote SDG 16 on “peace and Justice”. The world continues to face the most challenging circumstances comprised of terrorism, massive refugee’s movements and increasing human rights violation. As per 1995 UN resolution, youth should be brought on board in discussing the international development policy and decision-making Agenda.

Thank you for the good Audience accorded to me. Remember Small Actions Big Change.
